DePaul College Prep’s varsity wrestlers took on more than a dozen opponents at the Chicago Catholic League two day tournament last weekend from Friday, January 19th to Saturday, January 20th. Their opponents ranged from Loyola Academy, Marmion Academy, Montini Catholic, St. Laurence and many more.

Friday night at Mount Carmel, the boys wrestled in hopes of securing a spot to wrestle the following day. From takedowns, to reversals, to near-falls, and escapes, the team as a whole advanced to Saturday. Kasim Quinn and Isaiah Tejada came out of near fall incidents and a pin by both Ricky Rivera and Joe Modica helped the team score greatly, yet sadly, DePaul College Prep did not win any placements at this tournament. Nearing the end of the regular season, with wrestling regionals nearing on February 3rd, senior wrestler Noah Nava said, “The team as a whole is looking better as the post season comes near.” He also stated that the new guys on the team have stepped up and challenged the varsity wrestlers. Nava stated, “The competition the new guys bring to practice and meets is a big reason we have a winning record this year.” As stated at the Ram-done acts of kindness assembly, the team came in at second place during regionals during the 2016-17 season, and the team’s goal is to place first this season, as well as make a team state appearance. Nava also stated “A lot of the new wrestlers will have roles in the upcoming regional which is huge.”

The Chicago Catholic League tournament was successful, and while not placing, the varsity wrestlers now know what they must work on and improve in order for them to place in the upcoming regionals. If the team places first in regionals, they will become the 8th ranked team in the 1A category of the IHSA. As Coach Rabideau repeatedly stated, “If wrestling were easy, it would have a ball.”
